Connick Tree Care inform Trading Standards of Rogue Traders Fake Tree Surgeon is Twigged by Resident A conman ran off when he was rumbled by Trading Standards officers, abandoning his accomplice at the scene. Early on Wednesday last week, a man persuaded a homeowner in Tadworth that he and his female companion were from Connick Tree Care, a Reigate based tree surgery company, and set about trimming her garden. But even when it emerged that the duo were not from Connick, with Trading Standards officers primed to act, the woman was so pleased with the work they had done she insisted on paying the rouge trader £200. And because she refused to give a statement to Trading Standards officers, no further action could be taken against the pair. A neighbour had raised the alarm after visiting the victim, who told her that the man had showed her a photographic ID card. He has also told her he had been in the area to cut someone else’s lawn, but the grass was too wet. The neighbour, who did not want to be named because she was worried about reprisals, said: “It escalated this morning about half past nine. This man appeared in her garden and I went round to speak to her about it. She said he was from Connick and that’s what made me worry, because he was in an unmarked van and Connick don’t drive around in unmarked vans. She also said he had made out he was going to a house nearby to cut the lawn, but I use Connick and I know they don’t cut grass”. The concerned neighbour then phoned Connick, asking if they had staff working in the area. The firm, based in Woodhatch Road, Reigate, sent out a van to the property to confirm that none of their tree surgeons was there, and alerted Trading Standards. When officers arrived, the conman gave his name before jumping a fence and running off, leaving his female companion to face them. But rather then being led away in disgrace, the accomplice found herself £200 better off. A spokeswoman for Surrey County Council said: “The victim was fearful of possible reprisals and so even when advised she didn’t have to give the offenders any money legally she insisted on giving them £200”. A spokesman from Connick Tree Care said: “We would like to point out to anybody in future that we never knock on doors to get work; its all pre-arranged with estimates”. Surrey County Council recently announced a new fly-on-the-wall documentary series, The Scam Squad, which exposes rogue traders. Surrey Mirror, Thursday, June 7, 2007 Area Manager, Dan Pennington, said: “The rogue trader was going to charge the victim £450.00, this is twice the price that Connick Tree Care would have charged”. |
