“Tree Cutting and Pruning” are very general terms that is not normally used by professional tree companies; the same can be said for “Lopping, Topping, Trimming and Shaping”. There is a British Standard for tree works (BS3998) and professional tree contractors should be working to these standards. Complying to BS3998 means that trees are properly considered with regard to species, age and condition and after pruning trees should be left with a natural form. Heavy “topping” (sometimes called pollarding) should not be undertaken on mature trees that have not been previously treated in this way as the tree can be ruined.
There are three main types of tree pruning within the British Standard; crown lifting, crown thinning and crown reduction, please see further details of these operations by clicking on the links. This will help you to decide which type of pruning you require, sometimes all three operations can be undertaken to keep tree dimensions under control and to reduce shading or reduce the risks of tree failure.
Please note that major surgery, chainsaw work and any pruning which is substantial, high, inaccessible, or requires a ladder, should be done by a qualified and registered expert, both for your own safety and also for the long-term health of your tree.
